Winchester College Welcomes New Head

19th July 2022

The Warden and Fellows of Winchester College are delighted to announce the appointment of Ms Elizabeth Stone to succeed Dr Tim Hands as Head of Winchester College from September 2023.

Ms Stone has enjoyed notable successes in her past eight years as Principal of Queenwood School, Sydney, a leading independent girls’ school with 900 pupils.

She brings a wide range of previous experience from both co-educational and single-sex, day and boarding schools in Australia and the UK. She was Vice Principal of Cheltenham Ladies College from 2012-14 and, immediately before this, she spent three years at Winchester, as a maths teacher and Undermaster.

She was educated at Ascham School and has undergraduate degrees from the University of New South Wales, where she studied Maths, German and Law.  At Oxford University she studied as a Rhodes Scholar and completed a master’s degree at University College.  She worked at the Supreme Court of New South Wales and held an academic appointment at the University of New South Wales Faculty of Law, one of Australia’s leading law schools, where she specialised in commercial contract law before commencing her teaching career.

Sir Richard Stagg, Warden of Winchester College commented: ‘We are very fortunate to have appointed such an outstanding candidate. Throughout the competitive recruitment process, we were impressed by Elizabeth’s breadth of experience and by her values and vision.  These are aligned closely with our own, as we continue to increase access to the school through an expansion of the bursary programme and the admission of girls in the Sixth Form.’

“I am delighted to be re-joining Winchester College, which is already a special place for me and my family, and feel deeply honoured to be invited to lead a school with such a proud history and contemporary outlook.”

On joining the College, Ms Stone commented: “I am delighted to be re-joining Winchester College, which is already a special place for me and my family, and feel deeply honoured to be invited to lead a school with such a proud history and contemporary outlook. I look forward to getting to know all the pupils, staff, parents, and wider community.”
