Congratulations to Sixth Form pupil, Brandon Chan who came 3rd worldwide in the independent open category at the International Economics Olympiad this summer.
Brandon was the highest-scoring UK contestant and achieved a near-perfect score of 75/80 (19/20 questions answered correctly) in one of his exams.
The Olympiad was hosted virtually by Latvia from 26 July - 1 August 2021 and was opened by Egils Levits, President of Latvia. It featured 44 different nations with contestants from 27 countries in the independent open category.

In this year's Wykeham Journal, Professor Paul Elkington MBE (Old Wykehamist) highlights how his work on researching and treating patients with tuberculosis led to the creation of an entirely new type of respirator hood, which is now standard issue at Southampton Hospital and 16 other NHS trusts. Instead of patenting their design, Paul's team put it out on the internet for anyone to copy.

All Sixth Form pupils at Winchester pursue an EPQ research project, which gives them freedom to pursue their own interests and become experts in their chosen field. For his extended research project, Sixth Form pupil Adrien Joly chose to investigate the likelihood of a currency crisis in Turkey.

This term we introduced Computer Science at Winchester College, initially to GCSE pupils with an A-Level to be offered in due course. This year's Modern Languages Speech Prize Competition saw a memorable performance from Sixth Form pupil, Kit who chose to sing the French poem, 'Barbara', a hauntingly beautiful poem about the total destruction of French city Brest during the Second World War.
