Winchester's biannual speaker event, Studium, is an immersive day of talks by experts in myriad fields, with the aim of broadening pupils' perspectives and horizons. This term's event included topics as diverse as: 'A Short Walk to the South Pole'; 'Hollywood: no business like show-business'; 'Early Soviet film'; and 'The Mathematical Theory of Black Holes'.
Two Winchester Sixth Form pupils, Christopher O'Sullivan (Kenny's) and Frankie Shropshire (Furley's) review their favourite talks on our website.
It is a pleasure to welcome British Javelin Champion Freya Jones to the Sports Department as Athletics Development Coach. Freya is the current British Javelin Champion and plans to compete in this year’s European and World Championships, as well as the Commonwealth Games.
Funded by the Al Gordon Sports Fund, Freya has joined to help with the delivery of the school's Strength & Conditioning programme, as well as our Athletics provision. She is also working with the cricket team on their throwing technique. Freya attended the University of Georgia on an athletic scholarship and became NCAA Champion in the javelin during her time there.
Welcome, Freya.
Hear from Freya in this video.
Natural History Society
The school's Natural History Society has placed motion-sensing trail cameras in various locations around College, which have recorded some fantastic footage.
One of the first cameras we set up filmed an otter sprainting (scent-marking) metres away from the main entrance to New Hall. We have captured a whole family of otters with three youngsters playing in the water meadows and we have also had excellent views of many other animals including fox, roe deer and grey heron. Perhaps the rarest species we have filmed was the water rail, one of the most elusive wetland birds, that was picked up on one of our trail cameras.
First years Shloak Shah (Toye's) and Hugo Dunfield-Prayero (Freddie's) review the school play, A Midsummer Night's Dream:
"On 24 March 2022, curtains opened. An audience of hundreds held their breath. And a performance like no other began. But before that could all happen, a cast and crew of 33 students, across all houses and years, had to come together in order for such an endeavour to play out as spectacularly as it did."

On Saturday 18 June, Winchester College will host the largest event in its calendar, Wykeham Day (formerly Winchester Match).
The name might be new to some but the occasion can trace its origins back to Eton Match, a fixture beginning in 1826. Wykeham Day will be an opportunity to see the College at its glorious best. Guests from the whole College community are invited to come and enjoy sporting contests, musical performances, and cultural exhibitions, with plenty of food and drink on offer. Every pupil will be involved in some aspect of the occasion and we expect to welcome back many generations of Old Wykehamists, parents and friends of the College.
A large squad of 21 boys spent a challenging, yet rewarding, three-day weekend at the Schools’ National Fives Championships at St. Paul’s School. With almost 20 schools competing, Winchester secured some outstanding results:
James Kennedy (JP, Kenny's) won the U14 Singles title
James Kennedy (JP, Kenny's) and Arthur James-Duff (JP, Kenny's) won the U14 Doubles title
Marcus Cloke Browne (VI Book 1, Toye's) and Shiloh Wu (VI Book 2, Freddie's) won the U18 Doubles title
Shiloh Wu (VI Book 2, Freddie's) won the U18 Singles title
A special mention for Shiloh, who beat the number 1 seed - the stand-out player of the last 5 years, and whom nobody else in the age group has ever got anywhere near to on a singles court, in the most remarkable and impressive style.
Congratulations, boys!
Congratulations to our A pair Bertie Vallat (V Book, Chawker's) and his partner Henry Nicholls (V Book, Furley's) who won the Eric Angus Trophy for the U16 National Schools Rackets Doubles title at Queens at the weekend. The pair were the 1st seed in the competition and beat Tonbridge School 3-0 in the final.
The trophy was presented by Howard Angus (OW). Bertie goes on to play in the Real Tennis Open Championships in France.

Following the success of last year's inaugural Sixty Second Cinema competition and film festival for first year pupils, this year's short film competition launches with the chance for all years to take part. This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to explore their creativity, to learn about filmmaking, and to develop their own imaginative responses to a brief.
Tutorials are provided for those new to the art, with all pupils strongly encouraged to have a go at telling a story and presenting their vision in a thought-provoking, imaginative or humorous way.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday 12 May 2022, with the film festival event planned for Friday 10 June.
The Biology Olympiad results are in, with pupils winning 12 Gold medals, 9 Silver and 11 Bronze. These results set a new record for Winchester, with 38 boys entering the competition and 32 taking medals.
Head of Biology, Matthew King, offered his particular congratulations to:
August Deeming (MP, College) and Bob Guan (V Book, Beloe's) for winning Gold awards whilst only in their second and third years, respectively. This is a competiton normally entered by pupils in the top year.
Gorn Namchattai (VI Book 1, College) for getting through to the International Olympiad second round.
Winchester’s General Knowledge team recently took a win in a quiz match against King’s College, Taunton that made them regional champions.
The team, made up of captain Ollie Reynolds (VI Book 1, College), James Hunter (VI Book 2, Beloe's), Harry Latimer (MP, College) and Edward Thomson (MP, College), showed off an impressive knowledge of history, science and computer games.
Thanks to a bye through the Inter-Regionals, the team has qualified for the National Finals of Schools’ Challenge on Sunday 24 April at Tonbridge School.
