A Message from the Deputy Head Pastoral

We have been delighted to welcome pupils back this past week and, in preparation for their return, teaching and house staff started Cloister Time with two days of professional development.

Monday included an excellent and thought-provoking presentation from Dr Bill Young, one of the College’s Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists, on adolescent mental health. He focused on adolescent brain development before looking at how and when certain mental health concerns might manifest themselves in young people. He provided helpful practical tips for colleagues in supporting pupils as well as stressing the importance of wellbeing for all in the College community.

Tuesday focused on academic monitoring systems and how these can best interact with pastoral care for pupils at all stages in the College. Connecting to Dr Young’s presentation, colleagues also spent time in departments considering how their teaching and learning takes into account the neurodiversity of our pupil body, which will remain a focus as we embark on a more general review of the curriculum.

With best wishes,

Mrs Ali Harber

Invitation to Workshop on Drugs & Alcohol

We would like to invite parents and carers to a drug and alcohol awareness workshop, given by drug education charity the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation. This webinar will be held on Monday 16 May 2022, 1900-2030, led by Fiona Spargo-Mabbs, Director and Founder, and mother to Daniel, who died after taking ecstasy aged 16.

This workshop provides a great opportunity for you, as a parent or carer, to become more aware of the issues facing children, and what you can do to help them stay safe.

The workshop will cover: Levels of young people’s exposure to drugs and alcohol; what young people, their parents and carers, need to know about the risks; factors that affect young people’s decisions about drugs and alcohol, including teenage brain development; how to have effective conversations with your child, and practical suggestions for what you can do to support them to stay safe; where to go for more information and support.

Fiona has become a leading UK expert on drug education, including how parents can best support their children, and her recently-published book for parents I Wish I’d Known is available via the DSM Foundation’s website, as well as from other retailers.

Please register for the workshop on the link below. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Pre-Season Cricket Training Pays Off

Over the Easter holidays, the cricket squad travelled to Spain to participate in the inaugural The Cricketer Schools 100 tournament at Desert Springs Resort, Andalucía. Winchester played all three of the other teams in the tournament, giving everyone in the squad the opportunity to practice their match play. Winchester beat both Scarborough College and Radley College, losing only to overall winners, Canterbury Academy.

The winter training programme and this pre-season event stood the squad in good stead for the start of the season, with recent Ist XI wins against Portsmouth Grammar School, Hampshire County U16, the Free Foresters, and Hampshire Cricket College.
