Chapel Choir Tour to Durham

BY Howard Ionascu, Director of Chapel Music

Over the Easter holidays the Chapel Choir, including the Quiristers, took the opportunity to go on tour to Durham, singing in the splendour of the city's Cathedral.

The Choir sang three Choral Evensongs, with some Easter repertoire including Byrd’s motet ‘Haec Dies’ and Wesley’s anthem ‘Blessed be the God and Father’.

The service of Choral Evensong is very familiar to the choir (you can hear them sing most Tuesdays during term time in Chapel) and this meant that rehearsal time could be kept to a minimum, allowing plenty of time for the boys to explore the university city, and enjoy some excursions. The Quiristers went on a walking tour of Hadrian’s Wall, and a guided tour of St James’s Park in Newcastle, whilst the older boys visited Tynemouth and Culler Coats.

The tour proved to be a musically enriching and bonding time for the whole Choir.
