The Chapel Choir spent three days at the start of January rehearsing and recording in New Hall. The choir were joined by a number of extra singers for this project (principally due to the nature of the repertoire and the need for a more expansive sound to match and balance with a full orchestra) and the London Mozart Players.
The most substantial piece recorded was Gerald Finzi’s ‘Lo, the full final sacrifice’. This will be a rare recording of Finzi’s original (and very fine) full orchestration. Then followed a number of pieces with strong Winchester connections, either composers or arrangers, with music by Stanford, Ireland, Balfour Gardner, Dyson and Tarney.
The disc is due for release in early 2024 to coincide with two significant Winchester anniversaries – the centenary of the opening of War Cloister in May 1924; and the seventh centenary of William of Wykeham’s birth in 1324.
The recording was generously supported by the College, The Friends of Winchester of College and the Julian Smith Fund.
