Instrumental Experience for Local Primary Schools

29th November 2022

The school hall was filled to capacity for our annual Primary Schools Concert, given by the Symphony Orchestra. We welcomed 470 children from nine local primary schools, who were taken on an inspirational journey of music, discovering the instruments of the orchestra and even trying their hands at playing and conducting.

Members of the orchestra introduced their instruments to the audience and demonstrated their sounds, before performing the 3rd and 4th movements of Dvorǎk’s 8th Symphony. The children learnt about different families of instruments and some Italian musical terms, and sang along to the main symphony tune using their new knowledge of forte, piano, crescendo and diminuendo.

The visiting children responded brilliantly to the experience and one brave volunteer from St Mary's Church of England Junior School, Basingstoke even had a go at conducting the whole orchestra.

“Thank you so much for hosting the concert this afternoon. Our pupils had an amazing time.”

This annual event is a highlight of the school's outreach programme, a valuable opportunity to share the power of music, and to inspire the musicians of the future.
