Saturday 12 February 2022 was a great day for Commoners.
The first half of the game saw the Reds up by a decent margin of points all half. Using our wind advantage, we managed to make good use of Freddie Von Finck’s (VI Book 1, Kenny's) impressive kicking, and the half-time score of 24-8 to Commoners showed that a seemingly underdog side, having lost a few players to injury, including the captain, were not to be messed with.
The second half entailed some more weak Commoner defending against the wind but nevertheless we managed to hold on to our lead, adding points to it with a monstrous flier some 8 posts by Von Finck again. We made use of our strong hot and eventually lost the lead five minutes before the end to OTH. However, a few dodgy heels and we managed to get the ball back down OTH's end and score a behind, which was then remarkably converted by an outside-of-the-foot flier by Gianpaolo Cregg (VI Book 1, Trant's). With one minute to go we held on to our lead and a last ditch plant from Avery Goodchild (VI Book 1, Beloe's) allowed Commoners to finish the game one point ahead.
It was a very hard-fought game, one for the spectators, but undoubtedly stoic defending from our Commoner side and a deserved victory.

New Summer Course
We are excited to launch 'Catalyst', a two-week digital summer programme for ambitious and curious young people from across the globe.
Catalyst is for those currently in, or entering, their Sixth Form years, and will run 18 - 29 July 2022.
The course has been developed and will be delivered by a dedicated team of dons, together with a panel of experts from fields as diverse as polar ecology, theoretical physics, and the special forces.
Applications are now open, with places limited to 30 students.
The programme is open to Wykehamists. Please help us to spread the word, and share Catalyst content on our social media channels. Thank you.
Collections
A masterpiece by one of the leading artists of the eighteenth century – François Lemoyne’s Annunciation (1727) – has returned to Winchester College after ten years on loan to the National Gallery in London.
It is now on display in our museum, Treasury, which is open to everyone, free of charge, from 2-4 pm every afternoon.
Societies
On Tuesday 1 February, four VI Book boys took part in the Central London regional round of the National Schools’ French Debating Competition, an annual competition for A-level French students from some of the country’s top schools. Pupils compete in pairs, debating complex topical motions in French.
James (VI Book 1, Beloe's) and Arthur (VI Book 1, College) ultimately went on to win the entire regional competition on 8 February, defeating an exceptionally strong team from King’s College Wimbledon in the final.
Pupil Report
Last week's 'Cancel Culture' Discussion involved four dons: Mr Marjot, Mr Marcas, Dr Guast and Mr Crossland discussing their viewpoints on the question 'Should Cancel Culture be Cancelled?'. The opinions ranged from Mr Crossland's, who felt there ought to be 'book-ends' - extremes - in public forums where cancel culture is justified. On the other end of the spectrum Mr Marcas thought we should cancel Cancel Culture arguing that it was censorship exercised by radical leftwing groups.
The four dons spoke for 20 mins before opening it up to the floor, where the boys asked nuanced questions. I think the variety of opinion of all members of the room allowed for viewpoints to be really delved into, leading to a more rigorous examination of the topic, including how we should understand cancel culture. As Dr Guast put it, 'What even is Cancel Culture?'. I think the evening led to general widening of thought around a topic which many attending were expecting to be a lot more militant in one direction or another, and which instead proved to be incredibly interesting and successful.

The Inter-house General Knowledge Competition has made a return this term. Its first outing last year was during a period of Remote Learning, but despite the switch to in-person quizzing this year, the same three houses won places on the podium: College first, Phil’s second and Beloe’s third.
Congratulations to all participants, and particularly to College’s winning line-up of Arthur King (VI Book 1) (captain), Christopher Leung (VI Book 2), Douglas Page (V Book), Edward Thomson (MP) and Arun Sharma (JP).
At the annual LAMDA showcase evening the audience enjoyed performances from a wide variety of authors including Shakespeare (Measure for Measure), Arthur Miller (Death of a Salesman) and Jez Butterworth (Jerusalem). It was wondersul to have our first musical theatre number: Michael Nevin (V Book, Phil's) and Sasha Del Mar (VI Book 2, Freddie's) delighted us with pieces from High Society and Hamilton.
