V Book and VI Book 2 German language students visited the Goethe-Institut, a German cultural centre, in South Kensington last week.
Pupils learnt about a German anti-Nazi resistance group in WW2 through the film Sophie Scholl – The Final Days, and took a tour of the centre's extensive library, with the opportunity to peruse some German literature. To complete their cultural experience, everyone enjoyed a typical German lunch in a nearby restaurant.

Fives
Fresh from their success at the West of England Schools’ Fives Championships, Marcus (Toye's) and Shiloh (Freddie's) put on another fantastic show at the National U25s Championships at Cambridge University, run by OW James Smith (E, 2009-2014) and featuring OW Tom Watkinson (I, 2010-2015) as number 2 seed in the singles.
Playing against others up to seven years older, the boys met in the singles Plate Final, with Shiloh coming from behind to win 2-15, 15-13, 15-7. The boys also made it to the doubles Plate Final, facing the Cambridge University 1st pair, playing on their home courts, and yet the schoolboys won 15-8, 15-4. Congratulations!

Our chess B and C teams took on RGS Guildford D and B respectively last week. RGSG is a very strong chess school, but our B team won their match 4-2, and along with our A team, are now in regional stage round 2. Our C team fought hard and played well but went down 2-4 to RGSG’s B team.
Winning performances were from: Xerxes Gulabani (Turner's), Adrian Leung (Phil's), Robert Butenko (Kenny's) and Gabriel Szeto (Freddie's) in the B team, and Freddie Yu (College) and Vanya Mikhaylov (College) in the Cs.
Also in the Cs, Edward Bence (Chawker's) deserves a special mention, as he played on the top board and narrowly lost a tense and well-fought game against the strongest opponent on the day, while Jake Wing (Beloe's) also lost narrowly after being ahead.
