Symphony Orchestra’s stylish playing in Arturo Márquez’s exuberant Danzón No. 2 was a wonderful start to the listed programme for Sunday evening’s School Concert, which also featured Sinfonia’s elegant performance of movements from Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.
Mr Fraser told the tale of Peter and the Wolf, with the help of Prokofiev’s music and the musicians of Symphony Orchestra, and Jazz Orchestra ended the evening with a tribute to one of their favourite arrangers, Gordon Goodwin.
A pre-concert showcase by a group JP pupils of Terry Riley’s seminal minimalist composition in C brought their academic music studies out of the classroom and onto the concert platform.
A full gallery of photos from the concert will be available soon. In the meantime, please see below for a short snippet from the occasion.
Sport
A bumper sport report this week features cricket against Bradford College and Harrow School, some excellent performances from the Athletics Squad against Sherborrne, Millfield, Dauntsey’s, Canford,
Bryanston, Clayesmore, Leweston, and Bishop Wordsworth School in the Lutra Shield, a strong start for the senior tennis team, and more.
Music
Last Thursday, 25 April, the College admitted a new full Quirister; Riku.
After an academic year as a probationer, Riku was admitted by the Headmaster at the start of the weekly Choral Evensong in the College’s Chapel. Riku received his surplice and was then led to his stall by the Head Quirister.
Outreach
On Tuesday 23 April, the College welcomed pupils from its partner primary schools for its annual Computer Science Day.
The children took part in an intensive carousel of activities organised by College pupils and staff on topics ranging from AI to game development.
The event aimed to encourage exploration of many topics in the ever-growing field of Computer Science.
The feedback from both schools and students was positive, with one teacher writing to us saying ‘the children haven't stopped talking about it and a few even came in with extra homework and research the next day’.
The pupils enjoyed the range of activities, with our Head of Computer Science Peter Mapstone saying that ‘it was great to see them all engaging with the variety of topics that were put together, with many giving insightful and considered comments’.
