Sailing

Wykehamists enjoy exciting dinghy sailing. Beginners, or those with not much practice, sign up for professionally taught courses at the Hampshire Activities Centre at Calshot. On two afternoons a week, Royal Yachting Association qualified instructors develop competence and confidence in basic boat handling skills in Laser Picos. These little boats are fun!

Once you have built a modest level of sailing proficiency, you can start to train with the squad. We own six Fireflies (which are also kept at the Calshot Activity Centre) and we work on improving boat handling and tactical skills. Team racing is a dark art requiring exceptional sailing ability, thorough knowledge of the racing rules and of course very good team-work. Boys reach a high standard and many go on to represent their universities on the highly competitive team racing circuit as well as international match racing.

At every level of sailing, safety boat cover crewed by qualified adults is provided and at the Calshot Centre all necessary clothing, safety helmets and buoyancy aids are supplied.
