Director of Chapel Music

Winchester College seeks to appoint an inspirational Director of Chapel Music to direct our renowned Chapel Choir, in succession to Malcolm Archer, who has served the College with distinction since 2006.

Music has been central to life at Winchester ever since its foundation in 1382 when William of Wykeham made provision for 16 choirboys, Quiristers, who still provide the treble line for the Chapel Choir. The school is unique in having maintained its Choral Foundation to the present day, and the Music Department is now one of the leading departments in the country, offering outstanding opportunities to musical boys.

The Chapel Choir sings three services each week, broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio and Classic FM, and gives concerts both at home and abroad. Quiristers have won the BBC Young Chorister of the Year competition on no fewer than four occasions, and Chapel Choir boys regularly gain choral awards at both Cambridge and Oxford.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding choir-trainer with experience of training boys' voices to the highest standards. It is likely that he or she will have worked in a Cathedral or Collegiate environment. This post will suit a musician of the highest calibre who will relish the challenge of working with able and articulate pupils in a historic site of unparalleled architectural beauty in the heart of Winchester.

All our full-time teachers are expected to act as tutors in one of the eleven boarding houses, thereby making a significant contribution to the pastoral care of our pupils.
