Phil's Phil's

Sergeant's is one of the four boarding houses in the Commoner Block of 6.5 acres purchased in the 1860s by Headmaster Ridding (1867-1884), known as the School's Second Founder. A purpose built boarding house completed in 1869 known initially as Culver Lea, it sits on Romans Road facing Kingsgate Park.

Founded by The Revd E.W. Sergeant, the first Housemaster (1869-1882), it is formally known as Sergeant's but informally as Phil's after the second Housemaster C.B. Phillips (1883-1895). It accommodates 60 boys in a house that features its own games room with table football and snooker tables.

David Yeomans has been Housemaster of Phil's since September 2007. Before coming to Winchester he was Head of Design Technology at Windlesham House. He is married to Charlotte.

In September 2019 he will be succeeded by Daniel Pounds, who is currently Head of Geography. Dan Pounds teaches Geography and was Head of Department from 2005-2016. He came to Winchester from Bedford School in 2003, having completed his PGCE there. He was Assistant Housemaster in Turner's from 2004-10. He coached at the Boat Club from 2003 until 2016 and was Master in Charge from 2012-2016, coaching the 1st VIII. He also ran the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in 2011. Currently he coaches Under 16 football and leads groups mountain-biking, an activity he helped set up in 2009.

He is married to Abigail, a modern linguist, and has three young children. He is a keen cyclist and enjoys morning runs with his eldest children and the family dog, Elsa.
