A glance to the left as you pull off the M3 from London affords a view of the superb layout on chalk downland that comprises Hockley, a links-style course with wonderful greens and fairways but a punishing rough for those who stray from the short grass. The club was founded on Twyford Down in 1914. In 1925, to stave off property developers, the land was bought by two Winchester College dons and its connection with the School began. In 1955 the dons made the magnificent gift of this land to the School, so that boys at the school might be able to play there in perpetuity. Any boy who can demonstrate an appropriate level of proficiency may join the Winchester College Golf Society and enjoy unlimited play at Hockley. The current annual membership subscription is £40.

The School provides weekly coaching for beginners and also, thanks to the generous support of the Old Wykehamist Golfing Society, advanced coaching for squad players with the Hockley professional. In addition to busy Senior and U16 schools fixture lists, Winchester competes in the HMC Schools' Foursomes, the West Sussex Invitational Meeting in October, the Gerald Micklem Trophy in March, and the American Swifts Tour in June. There are also two school trophy competitions, Toby Jug and the Six Captains' Bowl, and two weekend matches each year against the Old Wykehamists. Many boys continue their involvement in their game as members of the Old Wykehamist Golfing Society.
