Chernocke is the oldest boarding house at Winchester. It celebrated the 150th anniversary of its foundation in 2009. For its first 43 years it was located in St Thomas Street in the city but in 1912 moved to its current location on the corner of St Cross Road and Romans Road.
Founded by The Revd H.J. Wickham, the first Housemaster (1859-1888), it is formally known as Chernocke House - its previous address in St Thomas Street - but informally referred to as Furley's after the third Housemaster, J.S. Furley (1894-1909). It accommodates 60 boys in a recently refurbished house featuring a separate Sixth Book Common Room.
Tom Lawson has been the Housemaster of Furley's since 2006 and has taught Economics at Winchester for 10 years. He is married to Jessica, formerly a Biology don. They have two children.
