CHESS

Chess is a popular extra-curricular activity. The club meets three times a week. Its teams and players compete in a wide range of local and national competitions, and against the strongest opposition.

Winchester's A and B teams both regularly reach the national stages of the National Schools Chess Championships. Both teams also play in the Southampton Chess League, with the A team having recently won promotion to Division 2.

Chess Club can boast several county champions in its ranks, and we celebrate individual and county successes just as highly as those we achieve as a school. For instance, we are proud that six Winchester pupils recently represented the Hampshire side which finished 2nd at the NYCA U16 Championships.

About a dozen Winchester pupils also supervise and coach at the College's Primary Schools Chess Club, which meets on Thursday afternoons during term time September to May from 4.00 to 5.00 and is attended by children from primary schools in the local area and across Hampshire. From January to March both clubs run the UK Chess Challenge qualifying round. There are two House team trophies in Chess, Senior and Junior, and also a House individual trophy. Since 2007, regular expert coaching has been provided.
