The Art School Aims:

  • To provide every opportunity for our pupils to develop, to the highest standard, their individual creative talents, critical and academic interests in the pursuit of excellence in Art and Design.
  • To encourage and foster a commitment in our pupils to art and to ensure a foundation upon which they may build for the rest of their lives.
  • To direct and develop a pupil's personal awareness of the implicit spiritual and moral relationships between the creative and the higher cultural purpose of Art.

The conversion of its 1870s romantic neo-mediaeval sanatorium has provided Winchester College with an Art School that has splendidly spacious, well-lit and fully equipped studios for ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

All pupils spend time in their first two terms exploring these different creative areas so that they are enabled to make an informed choice about whether they wish to undertake a GCSE course in Art. This course involves a firm grounding in the essential disciplines together with opportunities for specialisation.

Regular artist workshops are held to encourage a broad approach to the creative process. The qualification is taken at the end of the third year.

Advanced candidates specialise in one of the following areas or a combination of several; printmaking, sculpture, painting or ceramics. Life drawing is offered. Practising artists from all disciplines run workshops on some weekends.

Opportunities for extra-curricular activities within Art School are extensive; and working in free time is always welcomed. A wide range of exhibitions is held regularly throughout the year in the Angelus Gallery; there are study visits to major museums and galleries; art Travel Scholarships are offered to the Sixth Form; and talks are arranged during Short Half and Common Time.

The success of Art is best seen in the annual Summer Show where our creative educational programme brings out a wide range of ideas where individual strengths herald the emergence of artists of considerable talent. This is above all our raison d'être and forms a significant contribution to the creative life of the School.
