Winchester’s distinctive education endorsed in our latest inspection

Winchester College’s most recent inspection report is now available.

The inspectors were impressed by what they saw at Winchester: our intellectual and cultural life, the high standard of pastoral care, the breadth and depth of our co-curricular offering, and the overall impact on the development and wellbeing of our pupils.

One of the report’s standout features was its recognition of Div as a ‘significant strength’, a distinctive and fundamental element of a Winchester education. Inspectors wrote:

“A substantial amount of curriculum time has been allocated by leaders to the teaching of ‘Div’. This allows pupils to explore and discuss themes in depth, relating to history, philosophy and literature.

“Pupils engage with this curriculum with enthusiasm as they are helped to learn about and understand concepts and themes beyond their academic studies.

“Leaders’ choice of subject matter is wide ranging and enables pupils to converse fluently about and engage creatively with historical events, literature and philosophical ideas and approaches that span subject specialisms.”

“Teachers lead rich discussions that require pupils to think deeply and maturely, and to consider carefully alternative views and perspectives…this approach helps pupils to think independently and critically, form and justify independent views and develop research and…communication skills at a high level…It means that pupils are supported to develop an intellectual curiosity and analysis which they can pursue through interdisciplinary themes.”

Commenting on the report, the Headmaster said:

“Our thanks go to the hundreds of parents who responded to the anonymous survey, the results of which confirmed the quality and positive impact of Winchester on their children.”

“At a time of cultural change and geopolitical uncertainty, we are convinced that Winchester’s vision of education is more human, more interesting and more relevant than ever.”
