Sport

Cricketing Success

Congratulations to Sebastian (D) for making his first class cricket debut yesterday. He took to the field for Middlesex in a County Championship match against Derbyshire at Lord’s. Sebastian bowled well, regularly beating the bat and should have taken a wicket by LBW!

In other cricketing news, OW and former sports scholar, Jonathan Figy, was recently featured in an interview with The National. The article covers Jonathan’s international debut at 18, struggling during the Covid pandemic, and how encouraging words from College cricket coach Paul Gover helped him stay the course when he was considering giving up the game.

Wykehamists Shortlisted for John Locke Essay Prize

Academic

Congratulations to Lachlan (C), Zain (A), Wilson (X) and Jacques (B) for being shortlisted in this year’s John Locke Institute Global Essay Prize.

The annual competition invites pupils 18 and younger to answer an essay question of their choosing on topics ranging from philosophy and politics to history and theology.

The essays are then judged by a panel of senior academics from leading universities including Oxford and Princeton.

The final results will be announced at an awards ceremony in early October.

Good luck boys!

Lace the Dream

Charity

Over the summer, sports scholar, Jesse (C) travelled to Nigeria to lead some work for his charity, Lace the Dream.

A grassroots charity, Lace the Dream provides football equipment to talented but under-resourced young players in communities across Nigeria.

Many children still compete barefoot or in slippers but in just three weeks, Jesse managed to reach over 300 children, donating boots and organising and refereeing matches.

Well done, Jesse!

This was a great opportunity for families to meet up and get to know each other before they join Winchester in September. A wonderful time was had by all.
