Cook’s, Trant’s and Beloe’s Win at House Singing Competition

This past weekend saw each house take to the stage in this year’s House Singing Competition.

Adjudicator, composer and arranger, Peter Gritton was clearly impressed by the high standard of each house’s entries. The Julian Smith Cup for the best performance of a classical song was won by Cook’s with C. V. Stanford’s beautiful partsong The Bluebird. Schuster Pot returned to Trant’s for the third time in four years with a home-grown arrangement of Copacabana by Morgan, and a fine solo by Rebecca. Bobber Pot was won by Beloe’s with an energetic performance of ELO’s Mr Blue Sky, conducted by Oli.

An enthusiastic audience in the hall was joined by many on the livestream for this popular event.

Congratulations all!

Success at the Pringle Trophy Competition

Over the weekend, the Royal Marines CCF section travelled to the Commando Training Centre in Lympstone, Devon, to take part in the 40th Pringle Trophy; the annual inter-school Royal Marines cadet competition. The competition tests leadership, teamwork, problem solving, ‘green’ skills, knowledge & physical abilities through a series of exercises inspired by the rigorous Royal Marines training programme.

The team of Jad (D), Alfie (C), Hugo (F), George (B), Charles (I), Enoch (I), Fergus (B), Charles (F) and Ray (C) delivered an outstanding performance, achieving 2nd place out of 16 schools. They also won the iconic Endurance Run and Assault Course exercises, which utilises the same course that forms part of the Commando Tests which Royal Marines must pass to be awarded their green beret. Hugo was also awarded the Royal Marines Spirit Challenge Coin (chosen by Royal Marines commandos) for volunteering, without hesitation, to fill a gap in another team to allow them to complete the assault course, having just finished his own (winning) run of the course.

Congratulations boys!

Sports

Golf
The golf season continues to go from strength to strength, as the College 1st team took on a game Charterhouse team in the Swifts Schools Foursomes cup.

With regulars Harry (I) and James (A) unavailable to play, in stepped Harry (E), Aryaveer and Ben (both B). Captain Seb (G) and Sander (A) took the first game that went to the last hole. In match two, Kevin (G) and newcomer Harry (E) remained calm under pressure from the Charterhouse side, taking advantage of their opponent’s errors to win comfortably.

Finally, the Toye’s rookie duo of Aryaveer and Ben produced the headline result of the day. Playing against older opponents, the pairing delivered a calm measured & performance. Despite a couple of loose shots, they conducted themselves fantastically and ran away to a confident 3&2 victory.

Football
The U-16A football team travelled to Priestlands School for a Hampshire Schools’ County Cup match. Facing a physically strong team meant there wasn’t much time on the ball for the Winchester side, but a combination of excellent link up play and discipline meant the score was even at 2-2 at half time.

The second half saw the Wykehamists up the intensity and reduce the mistakes, putting the pressure on Priestlands, eventually winning the game 6-3 thanks to a hattrick from Osamede (G) and goals from Ludo (I), Skylar (B) and Will (H).

Congratulations to all!
