Winchester Weekly – 27th April 2026

This Week:

Communication from the Headmaster sent to all parents on 27th April 2026:

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to share with you the excellent report from last term’s inspection, which you can view at the link below.

As you will see, the team of inspectors was impressed by what they saw at Winchester: its intellectual and cultural life, the high standard of pastoral care, the breadth and depth of its co-curricular offering, and the overall impact on the development and wellbeing of our pupils. Our thanks also go to the hundreds of parents who responded to the anonymous survey, the results of which confirmed the quality of education at Winchester and its positive impact on your children.

We were pleased that inspectors recognised Div as a ‘significant strength’, a mark of particular recognition for this distinctive and fundamental element of a Winchester education:

“Teachers lead rich discussions that require pupils to think deeply and maturely, and to consider carefully alternative views and perspectives… this approach helps pupils to think independently and critically, form and justify independent views and develop research and … communication skills at a high level… It means that pupils are supported to develop an intellectual curiosity and analysis which they can pursue through interdisciplinary themes.”

At a time of cultural change and geopolitical uncertainty, we are convinced that Winchester’s vision of education is more human, more interesting and more relevant than ever.

Yours sincerely,

Elizabeth Stone, Headmaster

The Lord Bishop of Winchester Received Ad Portas

On Thursday 23rd April, we welcomed the Right Reverend Philip Mounstephen, Lord Bishop of Winchester, in the ancient ceremony of Ad Portas; the highest honour the school can bestow on a distinguished guest. Dating back to the 1390s, the ceremony was a memorable occasion. Blessed with particularly good weather, it was a fitting setting in which to formally receive the Bishop.

Winchester Takes Lea Spring Regatta by Storm

What a fantastic outing for Winchester College Boat Club at Lea Spring Regatta! Earlier in April, five crews competed in a head-to-head knockout competition over 650 metres; our rowers delivered outstanding results across the board.

Chris (H) and Alfred’s crews faced teams from Fulham Rowing Club, both coming out on top to set up an all-Winchester final, where Chris’s crew triumphed by the narrowest of margins in an exciting finish.

Our senior fours also shone, with both crews breezing past the host club to set up another all-Winchester final, where Lily’s (K) crew edged ahead for the win over their teammates.

Rosco (F) and Richard (A) were in brilliant form too, defeating both Fulham and Maidstone Invicta, with judges declaring their winning margin simply as “easily” before posting their fastest time of the season!

A huge well done to all our rowers!

Bach Prize 2026

Last Sunday, the annual Bach Prize saw pupils perform works by J.S. Bach on instruments including the organ, violin, cello and piano.

The afternoon saw some tremendous performances, with this year’s competition being won by Laurie (H), a wonderful achievement and a real testament to his hard work and dedication.

Many congratulations to Laurie and to all those who took part in what is always one of the highlights of the musical calendar!

Celebrating Shakespeare’s Birthday

In celebration of what would have been Shakespeare’s 462nd birthday, dons and pupils alike gathered in QEII on the 23rd April to perform readings, soliloquies and scenes from some of The Bard’s most famous plays.

All Systems Go in the Swimming Pool

Since opening its doors to pupils at the start of term, the swimming pool has been a hive of activity.

The water polo and swim teams have made the most of the training opportunity, and casual swimming sessions have proven very popular!

Wykehamists Win Prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships

Congratulations to Thomas (E) and Miles (F) who have won an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship, run by the Smallpeice Trust, exists to identify, inspire, and nurture high-potential young people aged 16–18 as they prepare to enter the world of engineering, computing, or technical design. It is one of the most prestigious scholarships of its kind available to sixth-form students. The two-year programme offers scholars a combination of mentoring, funding, and real-world exposure to industry, and being named an Arkwright Scholar is a significant distinction on university and degree apprenticeship applications.

Candidates must demonstrate both academic ability and a genuine practical interest in engineering or design, and it is here that our Design Technology department played a key role.

Congratulations Thomas and Miles, and good luck with the scholarship!
