The Wykehamist No. 1482

The latest edition of The Wykehamist is now available and makes for a rich and varied read.

The Features section ranges from an exploration of Winchester’s entrepreneurial heritage to a reflective piece on the College’s 160-year-old Debating Society, alongside articles on medical ethics and the Sixth Form experience.

The Arts section offers reviews of two recent College productions (Black Comedy and The Tempest), the Concerto Competition Final, and J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

Sport is covered through a Winkies season wrap-up, and the Wiccamica section includes the Kenneth Clark Prize and a look into the Archive.

Perhaps most excitingly, this issue also marks the return of The Wykehamist‘s own cryptic crossword, fully compiled by pupils and back for the first time since 2002.

Silver at the National French Debating Finals

Just after the end of last term, Alberto (B) and Matthew (Coll) achieved the best result in the College’s history at the National French Debating Competition (Joutes oratoires lycéennes)!

Competing in the grand final at the prestigious Institut français in London, Alberto and Matthew delivered an exceptional performance to finish in 2nd place, surpassing the school’s previous best of 3rd place in 2022.

Many congratulations to Alberto and Matthew!

Economics Excellence

Over the break, Sixth Former, Michael (C), represented the College in the final of the Great British Economics Olympiad (GBEO).

The GBEO is a prestigious national competition designed to challenge and inspire students, pushing them to develop critical problem-solving skills and test their knowledge in real-world economic situations. The competition consists of three rounds: an online multiple-choice economics round, an online financial literacy round, and an on-site business case round.

With over 2,300 entrants, Michael navigated two demanding rounds to reach the final as one of just 25 students, and was among only 23 pupils nationwide to score full marks in the financial literacy round.

A truly outstanding accomplishment, congratulations Michael!

Olympiad Medals for Our Mathematicians

On 28th January, many of our JP, MP and Vth Book entered the Intermediate Mathematical Challenge, a national competition run by the UKMT. The top 500 scorers from the Challenge are then invited to sit the Intermediate Olympiad, which took place on 19th March, with 41 Wykehamists progressing to this stage.

The results are now in, and they make for excellent reading! Ten pupils earned distinctions, placing them in the top 25% of all Olympiad candidates nationwide. Among those, we are especially proud to celebrate some outstanding individual performances: Dylan, Yan and Tom (Coll) and Tony (C) each earned a bronze medal, while Ben (B), Benjamin (Coll) and Fraser (A) took home well-deserved silver medals.

Congratulations to all 41 pupils who represented the school so admirably!

Supporting Education in Nigeria

Theo (C) made excellent use of the Easter break, travelling to Nigeria to continue his work supporting educational opportunities for children in local communities.

Working with Jinadu Anglican Primary School in Ikoyi, Theo coordinated the donation of laptops and Chromebooks to modernise the school’s computer facilities. During his visit, he also introduced Year 5 and 6 pupils to basic computer science and mathematics.

Theo’s work began in 2024 and has largely centred on two primary schools in Lagos. At Obalende Primary School, he has fundraised, volunteered his time teaching, and built strong relationships with pupils and staff, so much so that the school named one of their Sports Day houses after him. He has also donated books and educational resources, including learning clocks to help younger children develop key early skills.

Looking ahead, Theo hopes to raise funds for additional technology and to launch an after-school club offering tuition in computer science and financial literacy.

Well done, Theo!
