Girls VIs Commoners v OTH

The stage is set.

Once again, the College Canvas will host another battle between Commoners and OTH.

This time, the Girls VIs will be vying for the Ali Pot. The last two meetings have seen OTH come away the victors, but will the Commoner team carry the momentum over from the XVs win earlier in the season and raise the Ali Pot for the first time?

Find out on Saturday 14th March at 15:30.

The Kenneth Clark Prize Final

The annual Kenneth Clark Prize final takes place this Friday 13th March.

Named in memory of Lord Clark (OW), all members of VI Book compete in their Div classes throughout the year for a place in the final, presenting on a work of art or building for 10 minutes.

In front of an audience of the Governing Body, past Wardens, art historians and art dealers, as well as pupils and staff, the Kenneth Clark Final is one of the highlights of the academic programme.

Please join us at 18:45 for a piano recital, before the talks begin at 19:00, and see if you agree with this year’s adjudication by Jo Baring, Director of the Ingram Collection.

Sports Scholars get put through their paces

Last week the golf scholars experienced a detailed biomechanical analysis and physical screening by an expert performance director and leading physiotherapist from the company, Athletic Shoulder. Dr Ben Ashworth and Anna Poiser, who work with some of the world’s best golfers, cricketers, tennis players, football players and athletes came to Winchester to provide an insight into the work they do with leading athletes and also run some tests to determine areas of strengths and weaknesses amongst the pupils. The golfers used force plates to determine power output and determine any asymmetries in hip, glutes and torso flexibility and then Ben and Anna identified interventions and exercises the boys can perform to address these areas going forward.

Later in the afternoon Ben and Anna worked with a number of our cricket scholars, especially the bowlers, to look at exercises that can improve shoulder and back health. With the overload of forces and stress that go through the body when bowling our visiting experts were able to provide some essential education on how best to improve flexibility and range of movement which ultimately create robust and resilient athletes. It was an outstanding afternoon and a wonderful opportunity for our pupils to work with some of the leading practitioners in their field and is an example of the additional provision offered to our sports award holders.
