Jan Hepworth

Head of Spanish

I began my career in marketing and corporate hospitality before retraining to be a teacher. I was lucky enough to gain experience working in an all-boys grammar school in New Zealand, where I was one of the first female teachers, progressing to Head of Spanish and later, the Head of the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty.

Having worked in Seville and also travelled extensively in Latin America, I spend a lot of time in my classes, not only teaching grammar and vocabulary, but also introducing boys to the culture of the region and discussing topical news stories, such as the importance of Latin America as an emerging trade partner.

I have found that the academic curiosity among staff and boys at Winchester is hard to replicate elsewhere, with boys actively seeking out opportunities to learn long after their working day is done.
