Sixth Form Entry
Sixth Form Entrance
A few boys are admitted into Year 12 to study for two years at the School. Those who enter at this stage usually integrate quickly and do exceptionally well.
Candidates should be under 17 on 31 August in the year of entry.
Most boys in the Sixth Form take three subjects (Cambridge Pre-University) but those who take Mathematics in Year 12 take four subjects*. Details of the curriculum are on the website (www.winchestercollege.org).
Any available places will be offered to boys of high academic calibre who can also make a significant contribution to the School in various ways. The minimum standard for entry to the Sixth Form is six A/A* grades at GCSE or its equivalent. In practice, the level expected is likely to be considerably higher, and competition for the small number of places is intense.
Application forms are available from May in the year before the boy hopes to enter the School. Please contact Mrs Kirstie Richards, the Deputy Registrar, Winchester College, College Street, Winchester, SO23 9NA (firstname.lastname@example.org); telephone 01962 621247. Forms should be completed and returned at any time, but not later than 20 October.
A shortlist of applicants will be invited to the School for two days, staying overnight in one of the boarding houses, in late January/early February for interview. Candidates must come to Winchester at this time and tests cannot be taken elsewhere or at any other time. Individual tours of the School will be provided for shortlisted candidates and their parents. Parents of shortlisted candidates will be required to pay a registration fee by the end of November. Offers of places will be made within a fortnight of the tests and parents of successful candidates will be asked to sign an agreement to pay fees and charges.
Means-tested financial support is available in cases of need. Parents of shortlisted candidates, who require assistance with the fees, are asked to contact Mrs C P Hann (email@example.com) before the end of November.
Sixth Form entrants are eligible for Music Awards and the Master of Music welcomes enquiries or informal visits by candidates. Full details are available from Miss Jo Ambrose (firstname.lastname@example.org).
*Candidates who wish to study Latin and Greek may also take four subjects.
