Russian Circle Lecture

Dr Richard Connolly of the Centre for Russian, European & Eurasian Studies at the University of University of Birmingham gave an unexpectedly upbeat assessment of the Russian economy. He explained that Russia's oil, gas and other natural resources have facilitated considerable redistribution of wealth to other parts of the economy, which has benefited many ordinary Russians and thus explains Putin's enduring popularity. The impact of western sanctions, he argued, was negligible. Dr Connolly spoke in accessible terms and certainly provided a large audience of local residents and Wykehamists with plenty of food for thought.
