OW Under 25s Dinner: 5 February 2009
David Fellows, Director of Winchester College Society, reports on the OW under 25s dinner held on Thursday, 5th February 2009 at the Royal College of Surgeons, in Lincoln’s Inn Fields: Yet another very well attended evening for the Under 25s, which was much enjoyed by young and, perhaps, not so young alike! Chris Webbe (B 1997-2002) was the official Sen Man, but he generously ceded this questionable status to the legendary Patrick Maclure (I 1952-1957) and former Secretary of the Wykehamist Society), who graced the occasion with his attendance. Also present were others from Win Coll: Liam Taylor, Chris Yates, Sam Hart and Guest Speaker, Graham Watson, who kindly treated his audience to a fast-moving ‘all-rounder’s take’ on goings-on down in Hampshire, which seemed to satisfy its thirst for information, relevant or otherwise. Here are some photographs and the guest list.
OW 25 - 40s Dinner: Thursday 18 September 2008
This popular event, now in its fourth year, was well attended by about 55 OWs in the Royal College of Surgeons in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. David Fellowes writes:
After a lively Reception, during which many old friendships were re-kindled, David Fellowes, Director of Win Coll Soc, welcomed his guests and took the opportunity, before a mouthful could be enjoyed, to demonstrate the new Online Community, soon to be launched, albeit not without much-needed technical expertise from his colleague, Donna Hale!
Dons Common Room was represented by Peter Cramer, Tim Cawse, Robert Chee-A-Tow and the Guest Speaker, David Baldwin, who, in addition to seeking support for his role as Head of Careers, rounded off the evening with stories of dons, both past and present, much to the insatiable delight of his audience.

Wykeham Day: 13 September 2008
Over 300 people visited Win Coll on Saturday, 13th September, including Old Wykehamists and their guests, past and some present dons, non-OW members of the William Stanley Goddard (legacy) Society and members of the Rudmore Community, near Portsmouth. We were fortunate in that the weather-gods smiled on us for the first time during the week, reports David Fellowes, Director of Win Coll Soc.
There were very few spare seats in Chapel for an uplifting service. The congregation heard a sermon from the Headmaster and, at the end of the service, the new Warden gave his first Address to a Wiccamical audience, following his Admission in Chapel on 1st September.
Many of those present then processed behind the Rudmore Cross into Old Cloister for a dedication of a plaque near Bell Gate, kindly presented by Paul Lucas (Coll, 1947-52). This plaque commemorated the centenary of his father, Bertie Lucas, a former Sen Co Prae, being invited by the then Headmaster, Dr Burge, to initiate the Winchester College Mission afresh in Rudmore, Portsmouth. The Choir sang an anthem, the Aul Prae, Sen Co Prae, Trant’s Head of House, Trant’s Housemaster and a Rudmore representative all told the story of the Mission, illustrating its strong ties with Win Coll, a hymn was sung and prayers read.
The gathering then walked out of Old Cloister and over Bell Gate Bridge, recently renewed in memory of the late Sir Gawain Bell KCMG CBE KStJ (D, 1922-27), whose three daughters lead the way into the Warden’s Garden.
A hot buffet luncheon awaited in the splendid marquee on Meads, after which guests were able to enjoy a variety of events and exhibitions on offer around the School. The day ended with tea in School for all-comers, including those attending the special service in Chantry, once more organised by Mark Stephens (F, 1955-59), with members of the above legacy Society being invited for a special tea in the Warden’s Lodgings.

Domum Dinner for Parents of Leavers: 3 July 2008
Winchester College said its goodbyes to this year’s Leavers and their parents on the last day of Cloister Time, Saturday, 28th June. The Warden and the Headmaster mingled on a beautiful balmy evening at a Champagne Reception in the Warden’s Garden with their guests and with the dons, at the end of which the Headmaster gave a brief farewell speech to the parents.
The Director of the Winchester of College Society then invited the parents to join him in warmly thanking the Warden for all his endeavours and guidance during his five years in office and to wish him and Lady Large a long and happy retirement.
Whilst the Leavers and their dons were dining in College Hall, the parents joined the Director for dinner in a marquee on Meads, where he reminded them that this need not be the end of their relationship with the School, should they wish to continue to enjoy the feeling of belonging within the Wiccamical family through their recently enshrined membership of Win Coll Soc.

Scottish Dinner: 4 April 2008
The view from the New Club
David Fellowes, Director of Win Coll Soc, reports on the Scottish Dinner held at The New Club, on Princes Street in Edinburgh, on Friday, 4th April 2008:
73 attended the first Scottish Dinner to be held since October 1993, which was an excellent turn-out for a school according to the Club!
With 40 Old Wykehamists, ranging in age from 94 (Major-General Ian Robertson, who entered Trant’s in 1927) to 23 (Jim Ferguson – F, 98-03), their wives and girlfriends, and parents and dons, both past and present, the Wiccamical family was well represented.
The Headmaster and the Director of Win Coll Soc separately addressed their audience, which occasionally was to be observed glancing out of the Long Room window in the direction of the beautifully flood-lit Edinburgh Castle. It is to be hoped that the next such gathering of the clans, from whom several were attired in varying degrees of Highland dress, will be rather sooner than in 2023!

OW Dinner for the Under 25s: Friday 8 February 2008
David Fellowes, Director of Win Coll Soc, reports on the successful OW Dinner for the Under 25s, held at The Royal College of Surgeons on Friday 8 February.
Sixty-three young OWs, a record number for the event and more than double the previous year’s turnout, attended this year’s Dinner. The fast-ageing 2001 Leavers were out in force to celebrate their last taste of youth before re-classification as Under-40s, whilst there was a particularly encouraging representation from the 2007 Leavers in evidence. All were treated to a rollicking speech from Tom Lawson (Housemaster of Furley’s), who both informed and amused his audience.
Held on the eve of XVs for the second year running, my provocative forecast of a Houses win succeeded in encouraging attendance on Meads the following day, whereupon an emphatic win for Commoners (47-29) was the outcome!

Head of the Charles Reunion weekend in Boston: 20 – 21 October 2007
David Fellowes, Director of Win Coll Soc, reports on the successful reunion for American Friends, which was held in Boston over the weekend of 20 – 21 October.
The American Friends were entertained to a picnic lunch on the Boston bank of the Charles River on both 20th and 21st October and enjoyed weather in the mid to high 70s, whilst the Winchester crew competed in the world’s biggest regatta, involving 6,000 competitors from all over the world.
A dinner, held at the A.D. Club in Cambridge on the Saturday evening, was attended by 50 guests, including OWs, wives, girlfriends, past and present parents and their families, dons and the crew itself.
During the dinner, Michael Donovan (A, 54-59), outgoing President of the American Friends, announced his successor to be Mrs Meg Bradt, wife of George (C, 75-76) and mother of Peter and George (C, 98-03 and 96-01).
Among other speakers who included the Headmaster and Meg Bradt, Mrs Elizabeth Shannon, from Boston University, responded to Nathaniel Allen, a Wykeham Student from U-Penn, also in the crew, who had enlightened the audience on his experiences so far as one of thirteen Wykeham Students on the current staff at Win Coll.

OW Under 25s Dinner: 9 February 2007
33 OWs and guests attended the Under 25s Dinner which was held at 170 Queen's Gate, Imperial College on Friday 9 February 2007.
Ranging from the old man of the party, James White (G, 95-00) to a clutch of very commendable 2006 Leavers, diners listened first to the Headmaster’s warm welcome, before then enjoying the extraordinary oratory talents of the guest speaker, Simon Woolley (Coll, 83-88 and current Geography don), who, with the help of a Flipchart, no less, likened an ancient Mayan ball-game to the seemingly less rigorous ‘Winkies’, in so doing reminding his audience that kick-off for XVs was in only 17 ½ hours time, so ‘be there’!
These reunions are clearly not to be missed!
