Winchester College

IDEAS Soc

Founded by two innovative Wykehamists in 2013, IDEAS Soc was established to support and facilitate research and development projects outside normal lessons. Standing for Innovation, Design, Engineering and Applied Sciences, IDEAS Soc serves as a forum through which pupils can exchange ideas and commence projects, either individually or in groups. Projects undertaken have ranged from cancer research to the synthesis of electro-sensitive polymers. In addition, the society acts as a bridge between Science School and the Design Technology department based in Mill, promoting cross-curricular learning and teamwork.

The society regularly hosts guest lectures and organises trips with the financial backing of the Taylor-Young Fund. Effective collaboration with industry and academia is key to the society's success. Links with the Engineering Department and School of Management at the University of Southampton have been particularly fruitful. Collaboration with the school's Young Enterprise companies provides a pathway for commercialising products and intellectual property emerging from IDEAS Soc; strengthening the link between innovation and entrepreneurship.
