The college was founded in the fourteenth century by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor to Edward III and Richard II.

The admission of boys to Winchester at age thirteen is largely in the hands of Housemasters. When a boy is eight years old his name can be registered for entry into the School as a prospective member of a particular boarding House.

A Winchester education is unique. Our pupils enjoy good teaching and our teachers enjoy the liveliness of bright pupils. Success in examinations is one consequence of this, but we think it more important to encourage boys to love learning.

Everything we do at Winchester is an aspect of our pastoral care of the boys; classes, sports teams, clubs and societies. We are a fully resident community and we think of ourselves as a network of friends.

Although the School is immediately outside the mediaeval city walls of Winchester near to Kingsgate, it has always been a part of the wider community and this is nowhere more evident than in its current geography.

Guided Tours

Founded in 1382 Winchester College is believed to be the oldest continuously running school in the country. Our guided tours concentrate on the mediaeval heart of the College, and include Chamber Court; the 14th century Gothic Chapel, with one of the earliest examples of a wooden vaulted roof; College Hall, the original Scholars' dining room; School, the seventeenth century redbrick schoolroom and the original mediaeval cloister.

Open: For individuals and small groups, walk in tours last approximately one hour and are available all year except Christmas and New Year on:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday: 10.45 am, 12 noon, 2.15 pm & 3.30 pm
Tuesday, Thursday: 10.45 am 12 noon.
Sunday: 2.15 pm & 3.30 pm

Group tours for parties of 10+ must be booked at least one month in advance.

No tours available:

Saturday 26 May - all day
Thursday 31 May - all day

The venue called 'School' will not be included in tours running on:

Monday 7 May - Monday 25 June 2012 inclusive

Admission: Adults £6.00; students and senior citizens £5.00; free to Friends of Winchester College on production of membership card.

There is limited wheelchair access.
