Winchester College

Cornell Capa Photographs

CORNELL CAPA PHOTOGRAPHS OF WINCHESTER COLLEGE were exhibited in the Angelus Gallery in Art School from 23-28 February. Capa (1918 – 2008) visited Winchester College in Short Half 1950 and February 1951 on an assignment for LIFE Magazine. The resulting story was published two months later. He photographed every angle of Wykehamical life in order to give as complete a portrayal as possible of “A Great British Public School”. We know from his book Cornell Capa: Photographs (1992) that he very much enjoyed his stay and became a great Anglophile. There are 32 original prints on show. Cornell Capa was the brother of Robert Capa and colleague of other great Magnum photographers such as Cartier-Bresson and Chim. The exhibition was organised by the Kenneth Clark Society with Stefan Krick (G) as curator. Photos.
