Over the Easter holidays 14 Wykehamists helped to build a primary school in the remote village of Tarsall in India. Click here to see photographs.

BORNEO (Easter 2011)

The Borneo expedition centred around a Marine Conservation programme on Mantanani, a small island several hours north of Kota Kinabalu. Over 2 weeks we were involved in several projects in the local community including: preparing foundations for a new kindergarten, teaching in the existing junior school, carrying out a beach clear-up, and conducting surveys to assess new methods of dealing with trash and the potential to install solar power to replace diesel generators. We were also witness to the destruction wreaked on coral reefs by dynamite fishing. This expedition was a real eye-opener into the major problems facing communities apparently living in paradise.

CAMBODIA (Summer 2011)

In Cambodia, the team will be working with BCAO (The Bright Children of Angkor Organisation) in Makak Village (Chikreng District). BCAO is a Non-Governmental Organisation, set up to help less privileged children to go to school. It hopes to improve living standards of both the villagers and the school children, and make the village school a safe and interesting place. Possible projects for us include: construction of a boundary fence and toilet block, tree planting and gardening. Other activities include teaching opportunities with the orphans and helping prepare meals for the community.
