College dates back to the School's beginnings in 1382. Here 70 Scholars are housed around the mediaeval courtyard adjacent to Chapel. This is the heart of the School and its history. Admission is by scholarship examination known as Election.
Scholars are distinguished by the gowns they wear. Housemasters who recognise applicants of exceptional talent will suggest that a boy should consider sitting Election as an alternative to acceptance of a place in a Commoner boarding house.
Alastair Land has been the Master in College since Septemeber 2003. He teaches Biology and is an officer of Cadets. Before coming to Winchester he taught at Eton.
